About Rock Identifier
Rock Identifier is an AI-powered rock and mineral identification app for Android. Point your camera at any rock, mineral, gemstone, or crystal and receive an accurate identification result in under two seconds, complete with a confidence score and a link to the full encyclopaedia entry.
The app is built on a deep-learning model trained on millions of labelled specimen photographs, covering everything from common rock-forming minerals to rare collector species. The database includes over 10,000 mineral species and is updated regularly as new entries are curated and verified against scientific literature.
Beyond identification, Rock Identifier provides access to a worldwide collecting locality map with over 50,000 verified sites. Each locality includes GPS coordinates, a description, the documented mineral species found there, and access notes where available — making it a practical tool for planning real fieldwork.

Frequently asked questions
Is Rock Identifier free to download?
Yes, Rock Identifier is free to download on Google Play. Core scanning and identification features are available on the free tier. A premium subscription unlocks unlimited scans, full offline access, and the complete locality map.
How accurate is the identification?
The AI model achieves over 99% top-3 accuracy on the most common mineral species. Clear photos in good natural light give the best results. Every result includes a confidence score. For ambiguous specimens, photographing multiple surfaces or faces improves accuracy.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Basic identification using the on-device AI model works offline. The full encyclopaedia and the locality map require an internet connection. Premium subscribers can download encyclopaedia data for complete offline use in the field.
What can it identify?
Rock Identifier covers all major mineral classes (silicates, oxides, carbonates, sulphides, halides, phosphates, native elements, and more), common rock types (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic), gemstones and their simulants, and meteorites — over 10,000 species in total.
Is it available for iPhone?
Rock Identifier is currently available for Android only. An iOS version is in development. Contact hello@lessstudio.app if you would like to be notified when the App Store release is available.
How do I get the best scan results?
Use diffuse natural light — avoid direct flash or strong shadows. Clean the surface of dirt and weathering if possible. A freshly broken face, a cleavage surface, or a well-developed crystal face produces the most reliable identification. If the result is uncertain, try a different angle or surface.
